RARE

🥩 ALMOST RARE — A REVIEW OF RARE STEAKHOUSE, ALGARVE MARINA

A while back, I visited Rare Steakhouse at the Algarve Marina, and overall, I had a lovely evening.

I was warmly welcomed on arrival and shown to my table, with very good service to begin with.

🔥 My starter was a traditional flaming chouriço, which was a real highlight. It was flame-grilled right in front of me, making it not only enjoyable to eat but also great to watch. It came out beautifully succulent, packed with flavour and was a lovely traditional Portuguese touch to start the evening.

For my main course, I ordered the rump steak, and I have to say, it was excellent. Tender, full of flavour and cooked exactly as I wanted it. I had it with sweet potato chips, accompanied by a lovely VertentY from the Douro region.

The restaurant itself had a great atmosphere. It was very busy and lively, with plenty of people enjoying their evening, which added to the ambiance.

Now for the other side of the review…

When it came time to order dessert, things became a little confusing. I had several different waiters attending to me during the evening, and it seemed there was some confusion over whether my dessert order had already been taken.

I had the menu and was ready to order, but unfortunately, I ended up waiting almost half an hour for someone to come back to me.

Eventually, I managed to speak to a waiter and explained that, by that stage, it was getting late and I had unfortunately lost my appetite, so I decided to cancel the dessert.

It really felt like a classic case of “too many cooks spoil the broth” — particularly on such a busy evening. It wasn't that the staff weren't friendly; it seemed more like communication simply got lost between several different waiters.

🍽️ The good: A fantastic flaming chouriço, excellent steak, great flavours, a lovely wine and a vibrant atmosphere.

🤔 The not-so-good: The dessert service became confusing and the wait was simply too long.

But overall, I still enjoyed my evening at Rare. The food I had was very good, and the flaming chouriço was certainly something I enjoyed experiencing.

Algarve Food Explorers review — a very enjoyable evening, with a little room for improvement in the service department.

Gávea Steakhouse

🍽️ Algarve Food Explorers – Restaurant Review

Gávea Steakhouse | Vilamoura Marina

An evening at Gávea Steakhouse in Vilamoura Marina, enjoying a selection of dishes from the menu, provided a lovely opportunity to explore the restaurant’s food, flavours and presentation.

🥣 Starter – Creamy Tomato Soup

I began the evening with a rich, creamy tomato soup, served piping hot and full of flavour. The soup was comforting and enjoyable, with a lovely tomato taste that made it a welcoming start to the meal.

What made it particularly interesting was the topping of little golden croissant pieces, adding a delicate crunch and a distinctive touch to the presentation. It was a delicious and satisfying way to begin the dining experience.

🥩 Main Course – Mixed-Meat Skewer

For my main course, I chose a mixed-meat skewer featuring chicken, beef, pork and chorizo, complemented by red and green peppers and onion.

The combination offered a variety of flavours, with the chorizo adding an extra layer of richness. The onions, beautifully charred by the flames, brought a pleasant smoky and slightly caramelised flavour that complemented the meat and vegetables.

The chips were another highlight, cooked just as they should be — fluffy and soft on the inside, with a lovely crispy exterior. They were an excellent accompaniment to the skewer.

In terms of the meat itself, the cooking leaned a little more towards the well-done side than my personal preference. Of course, everyone has their own taste when it comes to how meat should be cooked, and a little variation in cooking preferences is part of the individual dining experience.

Overall, the skewer was a flavourful and satisfying main course, with the chargrilled vegetables and excellent chips helping to bring the dish together.

🍎 Dessert – Apple Tart with Vanilla Ice Cream

To finish the meal, I enjoyed an apple tart served with vanilla ice cream, cream, a fresh strawberry and a touch of cinnamon.

The tart had a lovely natural apple flavour, a delicate, crumbly texture and a pleasant balance of sweetness and tartness. The presentation was particularly appealing, with the dessert beautifully arranged on the plate.

The vanilla ice cream was creamy, with a rich, full-cream taste, while the accompanying cream, strawberry and hint of cinnamon complemented the apple perfectly. Each element contributed to a well-balanced dessert and a very enjoyable finish to the evening.

⭐ Overall Impression

My experience at Gávea Steakhouse was an enjoyable evening of dining in the attractive setting of Vilamoura Marina.

The tomato soup was a comforting and flavourful starter, the mixed-meat skewer offered a pleasing combination of chargrilled flavours, and the crispy chips were a definite highlight. The apple tart provided a fresh, creamy and beautifully presented conclusion to the meal.

As always, individual preferences play a role in how we experience a dish, particularly when it comes to the cooking of meat. Nevertheless, there was plenty to enjoy throughout the meal, and the dessert was a particularly lovely finishing touch.

PEPPER’S STEAKHOUSE

🥩 FOOD EXPLORERS REVIEW | PEPPER’S STEAKHOUSE, VILAMOURA MARINA
Sometimes you visit a restaurant and enjoy a good meal. And then, occasionally, you discover somewhere that takes the whole dining experience to another level.
A while ago, I had the pleasure of visiting Pepper’s Steakhouse, located inside the Tivoli Hotel overlooking the beautiful Vilamoura Marina — and this was definitely one of those occasions.
From the moment you enter, the atmosphere sets the tone. Sophisticated surroundings, beautiful instrumental music in the background, views over the marina and an excellent selection of wines make for a truly special dining experience.
We started with freshly served bread accompanied by three different butters, including a creamy spread with a delicious prawn pâté.
For my appetizer, I chose the sautéed shrimp, served with an incredible sauce. It was so good that dipping the crouton bread into that sauce became part of the experience! The only problem was that I ran out of both bread and shrimp far too quickly! 😂
Then came the main event…
🥩 Rib-eye steak with creamy potato and mustard mash — €49
This was honestly one of the best steaks I have ever eaten.
The steak was succulent, incredibly tender and beautifully cooked. Every bite was packed with flavour, and the texture was so soft it practically melted in my mouth. Combined with the creamy mustard mash, it was an absolute delight.
And I have to mention the wine — a bold, smooth and beautifully balanced Alentejo wine, enjoyed while overlooking the marina. It complemented the meal perfectly.
